Mission: The
mission of the Boys & Girls Club/Girls Inc. of Pueblo County & Lower
Arkansas Valley is to effectively meet the needs of youth in Pueblo and
Otero Counties, to help them overcome the effects of disadvantaged
circumstances and to develop their capacities to be self-sufficient,
responsible members of the community; and to serve as vigorous advocates for
youth, focusing attention on the special needs of girls and the special
needs of boys.
Who We Serve:
Boys & Girls Club/Girls Inc. serves almost 2,000 girls and boys, ages 5-18,
at five Centers in Pueblo County and one in Otero County. Our girls and
boys come predominately from disadvantaged circumstances: 61% are Latino/a,
another 14% are minorities; 75% live at or below poverty; 39% live with
their mother only, 4% with their father only; and 21% live with neither
parent.
What We Do: We
provide an out-of-school, facility-based, comprehensive prevention program
utilizing the resources from our affiliation with two national
organizations, Girls Incorporated® and Boys & Girls Clubs of
America. The Club is "Fun With a Purpose." Our intent for the children
who walk through our doors are that they continue in school, avoid the use
of controlled substances, resolve differences peacefully, develop
educational and career goals, deter adolescent sexual activity and interact
positively with their family and friends. |
